One of the most common questions we receive at The Ultrasound Bar HD is: "When should I come in?" With over 20 years as a certified diagnostic medical sonographer, I can tell you exactly which weeks give you the most emotional, detailed, and memorable images of your baby.
Here's a complete breakdown by gestational age — from early viability scans all the way through the third trimester.
The Sweet Spot: Weeks 25–32
If you want the most stunning 3D and 4D images — where you can clearly see baby's nose, chubby cheeks, and tiny fingers — weeks 25 through 32 are your golden window. Baby has accumulated enough fat for soft, rounded facial features, there's ample amniotic fluid acting as a natural "viewing window," and baby still has room to move and reposition during the session.
Pro Tip
That's why we offer 4D sessions from 25 to 32 weeks only. Later in pregnancy, baby has less room and typically descends lower in the pelvis, so their face can be pressed against your pelvic wall, making clear facial images much harder to capture. Don't wait too long!
Early Pregnancy Scan (6 to 12 Weeks)
An early pregnancy scan is one of the most emotionally powerful experiences you can have — seeing your baby for the very first time, confirming viability, and hearing that tiny heartbeat. Detailed 3D facial features aren't yet visible at this stage, but the bond you'll feel is real.

Gender Reveal Sono: Starting at 12 Weeks
Eager to know if it's a boy or a girl? A gender reveal ultrasound can be performed starting at 12 weeks. Accuracy increases significantly after 16 weeks — by 18 weeks it's nearly 100% in most cases. For earlier certainty, we also offer Sneak Peek Clinical DNA testing, available as early as 6 weeks from a simple blood draw.
What Affects Image Quality?
Even within the ideal timing window, several factors influence image clarity. I always want to be transparent about this:
Baby's Position
If baby faces away or covers their face with hands or feet, clear images are harder. We know the tricks to encourage repositioning!
Amniotic Fluid
Adequate fluid creates a clear acoustic window. Staying well-hydrated in the 48 hours before your session helps.
Body Composition
Abdominal tissue thickness can affect ultrasound penetration. We adjust our technique to optimize results for every body type.
Baby's Cooperation
Sometimes baby just wants to sleep! A light, slightly sweet snack 20–30 minutes before often encourages movement.
How to Prepare for the Best Images
-
1
Drink plenty of water 48 hours before
Aim for 6–8 glasses a day. Good hydration improves amniotic fluid levels and image clarity.
-
2
Eat a light snack 20–30 minutes before
Something a little sweet, like a small juice, helps get baby moving during the session.
-
3
Wear comfortable two-piece clothing
Easy belly access makes the session smoother for everyone.
-
4
Don't stress if baby isn't cooperating!
With 20+ years of experience, we know how to gently encourage repositioning. We'll do everything we can to get the shot.
No matter which week you come in, you're giving yourself and your family the gift of seeing your baby before they arrive. There is nothing quite like it — and it's our honor to be part of that moment.
